Women over 40 · Over 50 · Perimenopause & menopause

Strength training for women over 40 — Glastonbury, CT

Private, one-to-one coaching for women in their 40s, 50s and 60s who want to get strong — not smaller, not "toned," strong. A coach who watches every rep, a program written around your body and your schedule, and a quiet studio with no classes and no crowd.

Takes about an hour. You won't be asked to work out. We talk through your history, watch how you move, and tell you honestly whether we can help.

Strength training for women over 40 — what changes, and what doesn't

After 40, lifting weights stops being optional

From the early forties on, women lose muscle at roughly 1% a year and bone faster than men do, and the years around menopause accelerate both. Cardio and classes do not reverse that. Progressive resistance training — lifting something meaningfully heavy, a little more each month, with good form — is the one thing that does. It is also the thing most women over 40 have been told to be careful about, which is exactly backwards.

The worry

"I'll get bulky."

You won't. Building visible muscle mass takes years of deliberate effort and far more food than most women eat. What strength training does at 45 or 55 is make you denser, firmer and more capable — jars, suitcases, grandchildren, stairs.

What actually happens

Waist gets smaller, posture improves, and the number on the bar goes up every month.

The worry

"It's too late to start."

It isn't. The research on women starting resistance training in their 50s, 60s and 70s is consistent: muscle and bone respond at every age. Starting later just means the starting weight is lighter.

What actually happens

Most of our clients had never lifted before they walked in. Six months later they are deadlifting more than they thought possible.

The worry

"Menopause changed everything."

It changed some things — recovery, sleep, where fat sits, how bone behaves. Strength training is the intervention with the strongest evidence for every one of them, and it is what most physicians now recommend alongside whatever else you and your doctor decide.

What actually happens

Perimenopause and menopause are the reason to start, not the reason to wait. We program around hot flashes, sleep and joints — not through them.

The worry

"I don't want to be in a gym."

Fair. Big gyms are loud, mirrored and full of people half your age. That is not what this is.

What actually happens

A private studio, one coach, a program written for you, and nobody watching except the person paid to.

If this sounds like you

Three women we see every week

The doctor said "lift"

Your DEXA, your bloodwork, or your doctor said strength training. Now what?

You have been told to lift weights and you have no idea where to start safely. That is the most common first sentence we hear.

Perimenopause

Sleep is off, the weight moved, and cardio stopped working

What worked at 35 does not work at 48. Strength training changes body composition when running and classes no longer do.

Never a gym person

You want a coach, not a class

No mirrors, no music you did not choose, no group. One professional, one hour, your program.

What we do differently

Lift heavy, carefully, with someone watching.

The women who get the best results here are not the fittest ones who walk in. They are the ones who commit to two sessions a week and let us add weight on a plan. Squat, hinge, press, pull and carry — the same movements the research on bone density and menopause keeps pointing to.

  • One coach, one client, every session. Form is watched rep by rep. Nobody is across the room.
  • Programmed for your body, not a template. Joints, pelvic floor, previous injuries, sleep and recovery all change the plan — we adjust every session.
  • Bone density is built in. The hip and spine get loaded on purpose. See our strength training for osteoporosis & low bone density page for why.
  • Women coaches available. Our Training Manager is a woman; ask for her at the assessment if you would prefer it.
  • A private, quiet studio. 20 Western Blvd, free parking at the door, no membership.

How the free assessment works

About an hour. No workout, no obligation, no sales pitch with a stopwatch.

1

We listen first

Your history, what your doctor has said, what has changed in the last few years, and what you want back.

2

We watch you move

How you stand, walk, sit and stand, and reach. What you can do comfortably today — nothing more.

3

We tell you plainly

What we'd do, how often, and what it costs — in writing. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so and point you somewhere better.

4

You decide

No decision on the day is needed. Book when you're ready, or don't.

Working with your doctor. We are strength coaches, not physicians, and nothing here is medical advice about menopause, hormones or bone density. Bring your doctor's guidance and any restrictions to the assessment and we will build inside them.
Common questions

Strength training for women over 40 — FAQ

Is strength training safe for women over 50?
For most women, yes — and it is one of the most recommended things you can do. What matters is progression (adding weight gradually), movement selection, and supervision. Every session here is one-to-one for exactly that reason. If you have osteoporosis, a joint replacement or a heart condition, bring your doctor's guidance and we will program around it.
Will lifting weights make me bulky?
No. Building large visible muscle takes years of deliberate training and eating that most women never do. Strength training after 40 makes you denser and more capable; most clients find their clothes fit better within a few months even when the scale barely moves.
What about strength training during perimenopause or menopause?
This is where it matters most. Muscle and bone loss accelerate in the menopausal years, and resistance training is the intervention with the strongest evidence for slowing both, alongside whatever you and your physician decide about hormones. We program around sleep, joints and recovery rather than through them.
How is this different from a class or an app?
A class gives thirty people the same workout; an app gives you a video. Neither can see your form or adjust when your shoulder is sore. One coach, one client, a written program that changes every session — that is the difference, and it is why people who have "tried everything" get results here.
How often should I train?
Twice a week is the sweet spot for most women over 40; three if you are rebuilding after injury or want faster change. Sessions are about an hour.
Do I need to be fit already?
No. Most of our clients had not lifted a weight before they walked in. book the free Strength & Mobility Assessment and we start from what you can do today.
